BBC radio presenter Nick Grimshaw with best friend Kate Moss.
It’s been a tough year for the singles community as many good and good-looking comrades have been diagnosed with “Settling Down Syndrome”.
One has only to look at the average Facebook wall to realise long-serving members of the Single’s Club are now handing in their loyalty cards and are shacking up after fruitless years spent socialising, sexting and Snapchatting.
First Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie disappeared down the holy matrimony hole, then Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes retired to parenthood (reportedly) and now we mourn the loss of two of the most accomplished and attractive beacons of autonomy, George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin.
Model, writer and jockey Edie Campbell won the 2014 Magnolia Cup, which was awarded by Tom Cruise.
The glamour couple married at the weekend in the sinking city of Venice in front of the world’s media and people like Bono, so talk naturally now turns to who will replace Clooney as the world’s most eligible bachelor and, for that matter, Alamuddin as one of the world’s most accomplished bachelorettes.
Actor Bradley Cooper is a front runner thanks to his rugged good looks and charity work. He has volunteered at Paul Newman’s The Hole in The Wall Gang – a camp for seriously ill children – and this year joined the board of directors. TheGuardians of the Galaxy star is also fluent in French, adopted a rescue puppy and, until recently, lived with his mum. The 39-year-old also has a taste for the high life and models, a must for any bachelor, and is dating British stunner Suki Waterhouse. The pair sat pride of place inside the Royal Box at Wimbledon this year.
A wildcard for the title is BBC Radio One presenter and DJ, Nick Grimshaw, or “Grimmy”, as he’s known to his mates Harry Styles and Kate Moss. The 30-year-old is single-handedly making the wireless cool again for the YouTube generation after he replaced his 38-year-old predecessor on breakfast radio in London. There’s no Kyle Sandilands-esque grot; Grimshaw, who is openly gay and has dated Italian fashion stylist Nicco Torelli, is a cheeky and charming radio personality who loves his family. He even took his parents along to an interview with Lady Gaga. Like Clooney, Grimmy is friends with a lot of famous females. He was close to Amy Winehouse and Peaches Geldof and famously got publicity-shy Moss to read passages of 50 Shades of Grey on air.

Honorable mentions must go to Prince Harry and oil tycoon, Eton and Oxford graduate and serial modeliser Badr Jafar.
Internationally acclaimed, trilingual and shiny-haired barrister Alamuddin has left some big stilettos to fill in the bachelorette stakes, though Britain’s reining Model of the Year, journalist and jockey Edie Campbell could be a front runner. The 24-year-old has featured in international advertising campaigns for Burberry, Yves Saint Laurent and Hugo Boss but looks most at home on the track. This year she won the prestigious Magnolia Cup, albeit wearing floral silks by Vivienne Westwood.
Last year the world may have lost Margaret Thatcher but gained her granddaughter, Amanda. The 21-year-old showed she had inherited her nanna’s gift of the gab at Baroness Thatcher’s funeral when she delivered a powerful Bible reading that made David Cameron’s eulogy sound like Britney Spears without an autocue or auto tune. She is studying at the University of Texas and has been voted by her peers as “Most Likely to Change the World”. When she was 12, her father Mark was banned from entering the US after being accused of trying to seize control of a number of oil reserves in Africa, so she took it upon herself to write to US President George W. Bush asking him to rescind the ban. He never responded.

Locally we’ve got hotelier Justin Hemmes and Packer heiress, Francesca Packer Barham, who has recently returned from Paris and enjoys lunching and shopping at Louis Vuitton with Richard Wilkins’ son, Christian “The Prince” Wilkins.Meanwhile, Warnie’s single, again, and Channel Ten is sure to trot out yet another topless waiter for a handful of women to fight over on national television next year.
Since Clooney has put a ring on it and Alamuddin said “I do”, who do you think are the world’s most eligible bachelor and bachelorette now?
