The couple didn’t want an over-the-top affair
As someone who has spoken out against marriage in the past, Cameron Diaz shocked us all when she secretly married her partner of eight-months, Benji Madden on Monday night (Jan. 5). But although the Annie star has typically been quite cynical about the concept of spending her life with just one partner, back in 2010 she revealed that if she ever were to get married it would be a simple affair.
“The mystique and the romance of a big wedding are lost on me. I don’t think that I could ever do something that extravagant. I am not much of a planner,” she told Parade. “I would probably make the phone call 20 minutes before the bus leaves for the chapel and ask if anyone is available to come!” And she remained true to her word, organising a super last-minute wedding after only getting engaged in December.
“We couldn’t be happier to begin our new journey together surrounded by our closest family and friends,” the newlyweds told People after the event. According to the mag, they invited roughly 90 guests to the nuptials, with a source revealing, “It was a big wedding, but they still managed to make it feel very personal. Only their families and very special friends attended. It all felt very down-to-earth and sweet. Guests arrived smiling and almost seemed giddy. Everyone was excited to be a part of the wedding.”

According to Us Weekly, the couple got ready separately with Cameron, 42, chilling out with her bridesmaids – older sister Chimene, new sister-in-law Nicole Richie, and Drew Barrymore, who wore black dresses with white bouquets, before entering to a Ryan Adams songs. Benji, 35, meanwhile, sorted out the finishing touches with the help of his groomsmen, his brothers Josh and Joel Madden, who were all kitted out in black tuxedos. But it was Cameron who blew everyone away on the evening, wearing a glitzy white gown with a low-cut back and entering to Stardust by Nat King Cole.
The jewish ceremony lasted a mere 15 minutes, with guests settling in for the ceremony inside Cameron’s home at 5 p.m and heading outside to the marquees by 5:15 p.m. But the nuptials were still heartfelt and memorable. An officiant read out seven blessings for the couple and Benji’s nephew Sparrow Madden – the 5-year-old son of Nicole Richie and Joel Madden – proudly carried the rings, which his uncle then dropped!

Gwyneth Paltrow, Judd Apato, Reese Witherspoon and Samantha Ronson were just some of the celebs partying at the star-studded event, and enjoyed cocktail hour in the marquee which was decorated with olive trees, linen tablecloths, and beeswax candles. Ryan Adams then gave a surprise performance which was followed up by Lionel Richie, who played Easy on the piano.
“Benji gave a couple of toasts. Cameron also joined him for one of them,” a source told E! News. “They had a piano player during dinner and then a DJ.” The guests then gathered to watch the newlyweds cut the cake at 10 p.m, by which point Cameron had changed into a short-sleeved, floor length white gown with beading and sequins. The couple kept the party going with a few die-hard guests until midnight before retiring to the bedroom to spend their first night as a married couple at home.
