Who can question the leadership qualities of a man who thinks the Kardashians are “the most remarkable people of our time”?
Nuptials aside, Kanye West is being pitched as a runner for Mayor of Chicago in a campaign by artist and writer Ben Shepard – who claims the lyrics of West makes him the ideal candidate.
As the Kimye hysteria continues after last weekend’s wedding in Florence, Shepard is suggesting lunatic egomaniac West, who grew up in the city’s South Side, step up to replace the current mayor, Rahm Emanuel. On kanye4mayor.org, Shepard wrote: “Nobody in Chicago are [sic] organised or powerful enough to lead the movement.
“Leading means providing enough charisma to motivate massive public participation and enough organisational savvy to make that participation meaningful.”
In answer to the question of ‘why?’ on Shepard’s website, the artist said: “Because Chicago is headed in the wrong direction and could lead a movement to make it the best city in the world.”
Shepard says “the politics implied by the lyrics and remarks” are one the reasons he’s backing the rapper, particularly the lyrics to See Me Now, which also features Beyonce, from West’s 2010 album My Dark Twisted Beautiful Fantasy.
How the lyrics indicate political leadership skills is anyone’s guess. Excerpts include: “Now, I’mma need you to kill the hypocrisy, This is an aristocracy, I’m Socrates, but my skin more chocolately.” There’s also: “I am Lord, Rap god, Greek mythology, And this life too crazy to think logically, Here’s something that you could use in analogy, My life is like a child’s illusions become reality.”
At the very least, the Kanye stunt is bringing attention to what Shepard believes are current problems facing the windy city, such as over-development and a poor transportation system.
Shepard, however, claims he’s being serious: “I don’t like the direction that the city is heading in and think that an internally diverse, multi-pronged social movement lead by a charismatic … leader is the best way to ahead another direction.
“Kanye West is the best such leader I can think of.”
One has to wonder how bad the current mayor is, if Kanye is being promoted as a better option. During his wedding speech, he praised the Kardashians’ “industry” and said his wife was “the ideal celebrity … the ideal art”.
Earlier at the rehearsal dinner he had humbly declared: “Kim’s way more beautiful than I am talented.” The actual standard of beauty or talent he’s referring to is unclear.
The Chicago mayoral election will take place next February.
