After 65 years, the Rehoboth Art League’s Cottage Tour of Art is an event vacationers plan their trips around, the league’s director said.

This year’s self-paced tour, featuring eight homes, is scheduled for July 8-9 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Each year people from the community open their homes to visitors to benefit the art league, exhibiting decor and art collections. While the homes change year to year, the concept of the event has stayed about the same, Executive Director Sheila Bravo said.

“It’s a very interesting event for patrons to be able to go inside these incredible beach homes in the community and to see the kind of art work that they’ve collected over the years,” Bravo said.

More than a thousand people came for the event last year, and 150 volunteers are involved, she said.

“Homeowners find it really exciting, especially if they’ve recently renovated their homes,” Bravo said. “I think that each home is so special and people will find it delightful.”

According to the guide booklet, the tour includes the home of John Carbone and Meghan Shupe “built with function in mind;” the brand new but historic-feeling home of Van and Bennye Adams; and the “whimsical” home of Mike and Pinky King.

Also featured are Paul and Cindy Lovett’s “eclectic” home, with a mix of styles; Howard and Pat Hauptman’s kid-friendly, ocean-themed home; and Irene Paonessa’s home, reflecting a love of travel and beach life.

“I think we need to support the arts down here and I think the money from the Cottage Tour does a great deal of good,” homeowner Pinky King said. “I seems like it’ll be fun.”

Three years ago the league began decorating its historic 1743 Homestead as it might have been decorated in the 18th century, Bravo said.

The Jolly Trolley provides shuttle service to each home, and last year the Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market was added as a stop on Tuesday.
