His arrival was a ray of hope after a dark week for Melbourne Zoo. And on Saturday the zoo’s newest addition, a baby Asian elephant, finally got a name. Man Jai – meaning ”confidence” in Thai – was chosen as the favourite name in a vote by Zoos Victoria members.
Born in December, the 131 kilogram elephant is mother Dokkoon’s second baby and a brother to big sister Mali.
The calf arrived just days after the accidental death of 11-month-old elephant Sanook, who choked while playing with a toy tyre at the zoo.
The Minister for Environment and Climate Change, Ryan Smith, made public the name at a special naming celebration in Melbourne Zoo, saying it was an apt title as Man Jai was very self-assured.
